Second Eastern Africa Sub-regional Workshop On Climate-Smart Agriculture Held In Kampala- Uganda

The second Eastern Africa Sub- regional workshop on Climate- Smart agriculture organized by FAO-Eastern Africa in partnership with FAO Uganda is taking place in Kampala- Uganda. The main objectives of this meeting are to:

  • Consolidate the outcomes of the first CSA meeting and officially launch the Eastern Africa Sub-regional Climate Smart Agriculture Platform.

  • Develop the Climate Smart Agriculture Platform Work Plan for the coming year.

  • Strengthen linkages at the sub-regional level between national CSA task forces and identify opportunities for national task forces to work together at the sub-regional level as well as,

  • Exchange information, experiences and best practices on Climate Smart Agriculture in the Eastern African Sub-region.

During the first sub regional workshop on Climate Smart agriculture held in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2014, it was agreed that a regional platform on Climate Smart agriculture is formed. Also agreed was that Climate Smart Agriculture would cover the broad range of practices in agriculture, fisheries, livestock and forestry and the entry point would be conservation agriculture with particular focus on encouraging and supporting small holder farmers to adopt the three conservation agriculture principles.

The main outcome of that first meeting was the agreement to form the sub-regional climate smart agriculture platform for Eastern Africa. This platform when formed would take lead on issues related to scale up of CSA/CA in the sub-region. Also during that meeting, it was agreed that CSA and the activities of the sub-regional CSA platform would be mainstreamed within the CAADP framework in order to facilitate adoption at national levels.

This second meeting therefore is expected to officially launch the Climate Smart Agriculture platform and nominate identified thematic groups and organizations to take on key roles.
