Dr. Joseph Mureithi is the Deputy Director General [Livestock], at Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization (KALRO). Prior to this, he served as the Deputy Director for Research and Technology, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, a position he has held since July 2006. He had previously served as the coordinator of the Legume Research Network Project, the Soil Management Project, and Farmer Field School Project funded by the Rockefeller Foundation between 1997 and 2006. He served as KARI’s Assistant Director, Regional Research Programmes in 1996. Dr. Mureithi, a career scientist, joined KARI Mtwapa center in 1981 as a research officer. He was head of the Livestock Section at the Centre from 1981 to 1996 and doubled-up as the Deputy Centre Director from 1987 to 1990.

Dr. Mureithi has held professional positions in local and international bodies. He served as Vice Chairman, Soil Science Society of East Africa, 1998/1999; Chairman, Soil Science Society of East Africa, 1999-2000; Vice Chairman, Soil Science Society of East Africa, Kenya Branch, 2001-2003. Dr. Mureithi has published about 30 papers in refereed journals, has published several book chapters and has over 50 papers published in conference proceedings. He was a co-editor of Legume Research Network Project Newsletter from 1998 to 2006.

Dr. Mureithi has received two notable professional awards from the Soil Science society of East Africa (SSSEA) and the American Society of Agronomy (ASA). He is also a member of several professional bodies including SSSEA, Africa Crop Science Society and is a life member, World Association of Soil and Water Conservation. He has successfully supervised several PhD and masters students through their studies and he has presented many scientific seminars aboard.

Dr. Mureithi holds a Doctorate degree in Forage Agronomy from Reading University, UK; a Master of Science degree in Grassland Science from the same university and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture (Upper Second Class Honours) from the University of Nairobi.
