In April 2013, the Zeitz Foundation and the African Conservation Tillage Network made an MoU to support, promote and build the capacities of Farmers in Conservation Agriculture, in Laikipia county.
The Zeitz Foundation promotes improvement of ecosystems through sustainable management practices that ensure ecosystems continue to deliver services whilst ACT prime business is to enhance agricultural productivity, sustainable land management and environmental conservation through promotion of conservation agriculture principles and practices in Africa.
The main goal of this MOU is to manage natural resources, the environment and agriculture in a sustainable manner through climate smart agriculture practices and related agro-ecological practices that will protect the social, ecological, cultural and economic heritage attached to agriculture. These will be promoted in a manner that ensures increased agriculture productivity and positive environmental impact.
In 2013 a number of capacity building initiatives took place, with Four Conservation Agriculture demonstration and training plots being established in local schools and villages and hundreds of members of the Greater Segera community were trained in conservation agriculture techniques.
This year three other Conservation Agriculture demonstration plots have been established by teams engaged in the Laikipia Unity League and all team members have received training and ongoing support.
